Squishy, Gooey Jelly Drops aka Jelly Fungus

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

Although these specimens look a lot like the slime mold from my previous post, but these are actually in the Jelly branch of the fungus family. Some are even edible and medicinal! I have to admit, I have never tried them, but maybe someday!

Ascocoryne sarcoides aka Purple Jelly Drops

Kind of gross, but also very cool! Now, who's hungry?

(Ascocoryne sarcoides is not considered edible yet, more research is needed.)

Tremmela mesenterica aka Witch's butter

These pop up all year long but I seem to find them most often in the winter. This is an edible and medicinal mushroom. I love how vibrate this one is! I wish I could have gotten closer.

Exidia recisa aka Amber Jelly

I swear it's not dog vomit or some deer organs, it's just a common fungus known as Exidia recisa aka Amber Jelly. One of the grosser looking ones for sure! This one measured over 5" wide by 3" thick!

Want to learn more about these types of mushrooms? Here are some great videos and resources! (No affiliation, just a recommendations.)

Also, please never eat a mushroom without them being properly and professional identified, by people like him, not me. :)

Mushrooms pictured were found on Lakeridge Park Trail in Seattle, Washington on December 2nd, 2021.

Thanks for reading!
